Westland Lysander – The Legendary Aircraft for Covert Operations
An Iconic WWII Aircraft
The Westland Lysander is one of the most distinctive aircraft of World War II. Originally designed for reconnaissance and liaison missions, it soon became an essential tool for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). The Lysander was tasked with flying deep into occupied Europe under the cover of darkness, landing on makeshift airstrips to deliver secret agents, supplies, and equipment to resistance forces.
Design & Performance
Developed in the 1930s as a replacement for aging biplanes, the Lysander's main advantage was its Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) capability, allowing it to operate from small, unprepared fields. Its large fixed landing gear and uniquely shaped wings made it exceptionally stable during low-speed operations, enabling safe landings on meadows, fields, or even forest clearings.
The Mk.I and Mk.III variants introduced improved aerodynamics, more powerful engines, and optional armament, expanding its operational versatility. The aircraft served not only with the RAF but also in Canada, India, and other Allied countries.
