Designed as an improved version of the Hawker Typhoon, the Tempest featured a new wing with a thinner profile, improving speed and maneuverability. The Tempest Mk.V was powered by a 2,200 hp Napier Sabre II engine, which allowed it to reach speeds of over 690 km/h.
The first Tempests entered service in 1944 and quickly became one of the RAF's most efficient aircraft. They were deployed to defend Great Britain against V-1 missiles, where their speed enabled them to effectively eliminate these dangerous weapons.
