Sd.Kfz. 250/1 Ausf. A, also known as the "Alte Ausführung", was the first mass-produced version of the German Army's light armored half-track transporter. The design was based on the chassis of the Demag D7 light half-tracks and was intended to carry small infantry units, often in cooperation with tank forces. Its angular hull later proved to be costly to produce, and was therefore replaced by a simplified version of the Ausf. B.
This type was deployed on all fronts, from France to North Africa to the Eastern Front. It had an open fighting area, was armed with a pair of MG 34 machine guns and provided partial protection for the crew during movement and in combat. Its variability led to many specialized versions.
