The Me 262A "Schwalbe" 1/72 scale model by KPM offers a precise rendition of the revolutionary German jet Messerschmitt Me 262, which entered service in 1944 and became the first operationally deployed jet-powered fighter aircraft. The aircraft was designed as a fast fighter capable of destroying Allied bombers, but due to delays in development and production it could no longer make a major impact on the course of the war.
The Me 262A, nicknamed the "Schwalbe" (Swallow), reached speeds of over 850 km/h (850 mph), giving it a huge advantage over the Allied propeller-driven aircraft. It was armed with four 30mm MK 108 cannons and could also carry R4M rockets, making it a deadly threat to Allied bombers. Although it had exceptional flight characteristics, its combat effectiveness was limited by lack of fuel, trained pilots and mechanical problems with the new jet propulsion.
The package includes detailed plastic parts, allowing the aircraft to be assembled in a variety of landing gear and armament configurations. The model also includes a realistically rendered cockpit, fine panel line engraving and decals with authentic Luftwaffe markings from the end of the war.
Its historical significance and innovative construction make this model an ideal choice for modelers interested in WWII jet aircraft. The package does not include the paint or glue needed for assembly.
