The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German fighter aircraft designed under the direction of W. Messerschmitt at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in the mid-1930s. It was the standard Luftwaffe fighter type for the duration of World War II. From 1942 it was partially replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and towards the end of the war by the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. In total, about 34,000 machines of all versions were built.
