The Grumman AF-2 Guardian was originally designed as a two-man airborne anti-submarine aircraft for the US Navy. After its retirement from service in the 1950s. However, in the 1950s, a number of these machines saw a second life in the civilian sphere - they were converted into aerial firefighters, designed to fight large-scale forest fires, particularly in the western United States.
These conversions included modifications to the fuselage tanks to carry fire extinguishant and other design modifications to allow safe operation in harsh environments. The aircraft gained popularity with operators due to their ruggedness, good load carrying capacity and flight characteristics, and were often flown in attractive red, white or yellow paint schemes.
