The T-55 was one of the most widely used and longest-serving tanks in the world. It succeeded the previous T-54 model and from the mid-1950s formed the basis of the armoured forces of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact states. The tank was known for its low silhouette, reliability, ease of maintenance and effective armament, which consisted of the 100mm D-10T gun.
The T-55 was gradually modernized and deployed in hundreds of conflicts around the world, and variations of it remained in the armament of some armies well into the 21st century.
