The T-44M was a modernized type of the T-44 tank that was developed in the 1960s as a transitional solution before the introduction of the T-55 and T-62. Although the basic design was based on the original T-44 from the end of World War II, the M variant incorporated a new engine, modified fire control systems, new fasteners and a number of design improvements. The T-44M tanks were deployed primarily in training or as reserve units, serving into the 1980s.
