The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was an American four-engine strategic bomber that became famous during World War II for its durability and ability to carry heavy armament. The first flight of the prototype took place in 1935 and production of several variants subsequently began. The B-17G version was equipped with 13 machine guns and could carry up to 5,800 kg of bombs. The B-17 played a key role in day-to-day operations over Europe and the Pacific and became one of the most important bombers of its time.
