In the spring of 1944, the Soviet plant No. 112 "Krasnoye Sormovo" began production of an early version of the T-34-85 tank equipped with the D-5T gun and a new three-seat turret. This intermediate variant represented a major improvement over the T-34/76 and allowed Soviet tank units to counter modern German machines such as the Panther or Tiger. Tanks from this production series were deployed on the Eastern Front in the final phase of the war.
